Curology – Everything you need to know

curology

What is Curology?

Curology is an online service that matches the customer with a medical professional to create custom prescription creams for the customers’ skin problems or skin needs.

Processes in Curology.

  • Firstly, the customer takes a photo of his or her face which he or she will submit online at curology.com
  • Take an online assessment of his or her skin to enable professionals to know his or her skin type
  • Then he or she gets matched with a licensed medical practitioner who then cocktails prescription cream to help with his or her specific skin concern.
  • Within a few days, the customer will receive a personalized treatment plan and also a prescription in his or her mail.

What products does Curology offer?

  • Personalized Curology formula: this is a lightly moisturizing base formula that’s an in-house dermatologist designed to meet each individual’s specific needs. The company recommends the application of this formula by evening time.
  •  Cleanser: this cleanser is produced to be oil-free and fragrance-free by using hydrating plant sugars and soothing oats extract.
  •  Moisturizer: the most important ingredient in this product is hyaluronic acid, which makes this product free from oils, fragrances, glutens and parabens.
  •  Rich moisturizers: along with hyaluronic acid, the product also contains aloe vera, shea butter and three additional moisturizing ingredients.
  • These specific skin problems fit additional formulas to the routine such as:
  •  Curology spot patch: this semi-transparent emergency sticker’s function is to draw out pus and oil from the skin and promote healing.
  • Acne body wash: this product contains Salicyclic acid at a minimal percentage to treat and prevent breakouts. Curology says it is safe for all skin types.
  • Dark spot formula: this formula is recommended to be used in the morning alongside sunscreen and also in the evening. This product reduces hyperpigmentation. A dermatologist’s prescription should be followed while using this product as it is important to take breaks from treatments.

Does Curology really use licensed dermatologists?

According to board-certified dermatologist David Lortscher, All of the customer’s direct medical care is done by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, but Curology also has dermatologists as staff who are responsible for the training and overseeing of nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well as answering questions for them. So no, you’re not actually matched with a board-certified dermatologist.

Does insurance cover Curology?

Insurance is not accepted by Curology as of the time of this writing but if a customer’s prescription contains oral medicines, then it will be covered by the insurance as most insurance usually cover oral medications. The company also accepts flexible spending accounts or health saving account cards excluding first payment.

How much does this service cost?

For any new customer, a one-month free trial is given for either a custom formula or a dark spot formula [shipping excluded]. After that, the cost of Curology depends totally on what you order.

What are the side effects of Curology?

If the cream given to a customer has active ingredients that are new to the customer’s skin, then the customer’s skin may temporarily break out while the skin is still adjusting to the new ingredients.  However, this is uncommon.

These breakouts can however range from dryness of skin, mild irritation, redness of the skin, flaking and temporary worsening acne especially if the formula contains tretinoin.

Can it be used with other products?

It is better to stop using other products that contain other active or potentially harsh ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, vitamin C and physical exfoliators. After a few weeks when the screen has finally adjusted to the new routine then you can gradually add other products.

 How effective is the product?

The answer to this question varies, due to people’s different skin types, especially when dealing with acne. The company uses ingredients that address all acne cases. The difference in solution it’s just time. A person with very oily skin will not have the same result as a person with mildly oily skin or a person with dry skin. As obviously the person with mildly oily skin will have quicker solutions to acne than the other parties.

How long should a person use these products?

According to Doctor Lortscher, That may vary depending on the skin type.

So, to see obvious results, the time variance might take from between two weeks to 12 weeks but an average skin should start getting improved by the 6th-week mark.

But in a case where the person has really bad skin, especially dried skin it may take a longer period of time, sometimes, up to about six months.

Is Curology worth the money?

Although Curology is actually a good alternative to seeing a dermatologist, this system does not actually beat the system of actually seeing the dermatologist in the office.
