Eye Trackers
The scope and reach of eye tracking technology to grow, both as a tool for researchers and as a source of real-time data for interaction. Eye tracking has grown beyond day-to-day uses, such as measuring how we look at the text on the page – from basic usability work like verifying that comprehension of instructions is happening to more ambitious projects getting logs of lots and offline activity with users over time. It has also grown well beyond the original vision research, becoming a tool used to understand human cognition, perception, mental health, emotion, and motivation, as well as how function influences those. We will discuss four of the main types of eye tracking prototypes of eye tracking technology in insight services that are on the rise. In 2004 one in 100 clients had eye-tracking used in insight services. At the time of the survey, two out of three buyers used or had used eye tracking, and one-third of buyers were doing so at least occasionally. This statistic boom was also fueled by advances similar to the evolution of computers: eye tracking equipment that extends from desktop to laptop to cell phone to wearable is being aimed at consumers and business users. Eye tracking is used in tandem with other measures to see whether a task might be a positive or negative experience. Eye tracking can also help to discover whether it triggered joy or sadness or some other feeling. Biometrics can provide additional insight into physiological responses. Facial coding can explain whether that emotion was good or bad. Surveys or interviews can provide information about why a certain reaction occurred.
In research projects, different eye-tracking approaches and complementary measures are generally appropriate under different circumstances. Some eye-tracking services and equipment suppliers can help you decide on which approach to use to conduct a research project.
