Office Decoration
Customers and staff both value good office design. It is vital to design a workplace that is convenient, aesthetically pleasing, welcoming, and functional for workers who spend a significant portion of their day there because these features all enhance productivity and efficiency. For clients, a well-decorated office sets the tone for the company, shows professionalism, and sheds more light on the company’s brand. Studies show that interior designs (color, ventilation , and so on) tends to have an effect on people’s moods, attitudes, inspiration, and so on. For these reasons, proper decoration of an office is very important.
In this article, I will be showing you ten reasons (from least to best) why proper office decoration is beneficial to companies, employees, and customers.
OFFICE DECORATION IS A DIRECT REFLECTION OF YOUR BRAND
Have you ever noticed that almost all the GTBank branches in Lagos have a touch of the colors white and orange in their exterior decorations or how the physical infrastructure of the very popular restaurant KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) has a touch of the color red?
This shows that these colors have become part of the brand. If you think otherwise, imagine a red GTBank building or a blue Zenith Bank building. Just like other reputable companies like MTN ( whose external layout is usually yellow), and Airtel (whose exterior decoration features the colors red and white), it is important to have a good office decoration as it will show a direct reflection of your brand.
IT SHOWS PROFESSIONALISM
Your workspace is filled with the image you project. Your clients would think that you have a cluttered mind if your office is disorganized. They will remember a messy or unprofessional-looking office even if you’re well presented in a well-polished appearance. It is important to ensure one has a well ventilated, less congested, and properly decorated workplace in order for clients to see professionalism in you as their first impression, because first impression really matters.
IMPACT ON EMPLOYEES
In many cases, people spend more time at work than they do at home. Members of staff could experience stress if their offices are disorganized, congested, and poorly designed. Poorly decorated workplaces frequently lead to lower productivity levels.
It should be noted that offices should not only appeal to clients, but also make all members of staff feel valued and at home. Efforts should be made to motivate workers and boost their productivity level because they serve as the first point of contact to customers in companies.
IMPROVES THE CONFIDENCE AND MOOD OF EMPLOYEES AND THE COMPANY AS A WHOLE
An aesthetically pleasing work environment gives employees a certain amount of confidence boost, and also the company. Companies with proper office decoration and aesthetically pleasing office settings can compete with other business rivals confidently in the quest for contracts unlike poorly decorated companies. In addition to that, well-decorated offices improve the mood of employees. Statistics show that the use of certain colors and plants as a form of decoration shows a positive impact on a person’s mood and productivity.
PROPER OFFICE DECORATION ATTRACTS CUSTOMERS
Before I elucidate more on this, I’d like you to imagine a scenario where there are two restaurants called Restaurant A and Restaurant B. Both restaurants are known to cook very decent dishes. Restaurant A has a very conducive and properly decorated setting while Restaurant B is not well ventilated with a poorly decorated setting. Which of the restaurants would you prefer to have your lunch in?
I’m pretty certain you’d eat at restaurant A because no one wants to be uncomfortable while eating. This is the same for other companies because customers tend to like and go to very comfortable places than the less comfortable ones.
PROMOTES INTER-PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CLIENTS AND EMPLOYEES
It should be noted that a happy employee is a friendly employee, and a satisfied client is a happy and friendly client. In a congested and poorly decorated office setting, employees tend to be frustrated due to poor working conditions. Also, clients tend to not get nice and friendly treatments from the frustrated workers which leads to reduced inter-personal relationship, but when both clients and employees are happy, they tend to be a better inter-personal relationship between them. It’s should also be noted that the the better the interpersonal relationship between employees and clients, the more the clients and the more the clients, the greater the company’s revenue.
IT ENSURES PRIVACY AND SECURITY OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS
Though a lot of people’s offices have evolved from being a largely enclosed space segmented with cubicles, some still remain in this archaic form of architecture. In order to ensure the security of classified documents in this type of office setting, one must ensure that proper office decorations are used. These decorations should include the production and use of cubicles, get cabinets, or lockers, which should serve the purpose of keeping the classified files safe. It should be noted that these lockers or cabinets should be segregated from the main hall where customers have easy access to and kept locked at all times.
OFFICE DECORATION CAN REDUCE HEALTH-RELATED COMPLICATIONS
Remember this popular saying ‘’Health is Wealth’’? The value of good health cannot be overemphasized. In a poorly decorated office setting, the office tends to be clustered, and cramped. This situation allows for easy passage of germs and other microbes from one person to another, thereby increasing the amount of sick days of an employee. For example, imagine a customer who has chicken pox stepping foot in the company. With the poor and clustered setting of the company, it is very likely that about 10% of the staff or more would call in sick. It is very important to properly structure and decorate offices in order to avoid health complications.
In addition to that, avoiding health complications reduces cost for the company. A lot of companies cover the health insurance of their employees and a reduction in sick days will certainly reduce overall cost in those companies.
GOOD OFFICE DECORATION WILL INCREASE EMPLOYEE RETENTION
I’m pretty sure you’re thinking and screaming the word “how” in your head, but you don’t need to worry because I’ll shed more light on it. Remember when I talked about how poorly decorated offices can cause health problems for employees and customers? Employees who become sick as a result of their poorly designed and decorated workplace tend to hunt for new jobs. As a result of this, the company has to invest more time and money on new employee trainings.
Employee retention is more likely to happen when employees are happy at work, and nothing makes an employee happier than a properly decorated and conducive work environment.
PROPER OFFICE DECORATION CAN GENERATE A REVENUE STREAM
I know you’re thinking ‘How does spending money on some fancy decoration become a way of generating money?’. Firstly, proper office decoration involves renovation or replacement of old, dilapidated tools.
The first method a company can use to generate revenue is to lower its recurring electricity costs. One of the numerous ways this can be done is by replacing all old and outdated bulbs with new energy-saving bulbs. Newer lighting solutions reduce electricity output while also lowering your utility costs.
In a lot of companies, there are lot of spaces that are not needed. Good office decoration and layout will free up space which can be leased to another company, thereby creating a revenue stream.
In conclusion, the points listed above are all advantages of having a well decorated office. Companies are business-oriented with the sole aim of making profit, which makes my metric of ranking the ability to reduce cost and yield revenue for the company in the long run.
