Early in his career, Merritt J. “M.J.” Osborn worked as a traveling salesman. He observed that carpets in hotel rooms were sent out for cleaning while he was there. While the carpet was being cleaned, which may take a week or longer, the hotel closed the room, losing out on revenue. Years later, M.J. was in desperate need of a fresh business concept. He was 44 years old, and his two sons were almost ready for college. He started working on creating a solution to clean the carpets in the guest rooms. The room might be prepared for visitors that evening by having the carpet in the room cleaned in the morning. M.J. created a company in 1923 and called it Economics Laboratory. He called his product Absorbit.
The business did not become the cash cow M.J. had hoped. But he persisted despite that. He turned to face the hotel kitchen, where electric dishwashing machines were starting to arrive, from the hotel room. M.J. anticipated that the machines would replace human dishwashers. However, there was an issue back then: the lack of efficient dish machine soaps contributed significantly to how poorly the machines washed dishes. M.J. took advantage of the chance and worked to create a superior soap. Thus, SOILAX was produced. It’s possible that the first version of SOILAX didn’t produce ideal outcomes. However, it was the top choice available. It was highly accepted, and it gave the fledgling business a more secure financial foundation.
It began to grow across the country in the 1930s, and by the end of the 1940s, sales had reached US$5.4 million. The corporation gained access to Magnus’s industrial specialized companies, such as pulp and paper, metallurgy, transportation, and petrochemical processing, when it bought the Magnus Company in the early 1950s.
Economics Laboratory began to expand internationally in the 1950s with the founding of its first foreign affiliate in Sweden in 1956. In1957, it became a publicly traded firm, and in the 1960s and 1970s, it kept growing. It bought Apollo Technologies in1979, however the purchased Apollo business was closed down in 1983.

In order to enter the European and Russian markets, Ecolab and the German fast-moving consumer goods company Henkel KGaA created the joint venture “Henkel-Ecolab” in the middle of 1991.
In the 1990s, Ecolab would continue to buy businesses, including Kay Chemical(1993), Gibson Chemical Industries Ltd. of Australia(1997), and GCS Service Inc. (1998). In the European Joint Venture Henkel-Ecolab, it acquired its partner Henkel’s 50% holding in 2001. The former Henkel-Ecolab was subsequently incorporated into Ecolab’s current global operations. After the joint venture was sold, Henkel would still own a 29.5% share in Ecolab Inc. as a result of the 1991–2001 Henkel–Ecolab partnership.
Midway through the 2000s, strategic acquisitions were still being made, and Ecolab expanded its client offers by starting a business unit for healthcare and a food safety monitoring company. It inaugurated a brand-new international R&D and engineering hub in Eagan, Minnesota, in 2005.
The 20-year alliance was ended in 2008 when Henkel sold all 73 million shares, or almost 29.5% of Ecolab, that it owned. Ecolab established Zurich as its EMEA headquarters in the same year.
